An intelligent view on diversity — “Rebel Ideas” by Matthew Syed

Finally, someone with some common sense.

Syed’s view, as explained from 37m onwards on Politics Live on 20 September 2019, is that when devising an advertising campaign to attract the widest possible audience, it may make perfect sense to involve staff with a background representative of various racial, class, etc “identities”.

On the other hand, if designing the aerodynamics of an aeroplane, the above tickbox exercise may not necessarily enhance the end product. The type of diversity that would plausibly improve the operation of the plane would be more along the lines of the Bletchley Park project, where you might want a mathematician, a computer scientist, a linguist etc to combine forces in order to “crack the code”.
